Sunlight upon Judha's hillsA
And on the waves of GalileeB
On Jordan's stream and on the rillsA
That feed the dead and sleeping seaA
Most freshly from the green wood springsA
The light breeze on its scented wingsA
And gayly quiver in the sunC
The cedar tops of LebanonC
-
A few more hours a change hath comeD
The sky is dark without a cloudE
The shouts of wrath and joy are dumbD
And proud knees unto earth are bowedE
A change is on the hill of DeathF
The helmed watchers pant for breathF
And turn with wild and maniac eyesA
From the dark scene of sacrificeA
-
That Sacrifice the death of HimG
The Christ of God the holy OneC
Well may the conscious Heaven grow dimG
And blacken the beholding SunC
The wonted light hath fled awayH
Night settles on the middle dayH
And earthquake from his caverned bedI
Is waking with a thrill of dreadI
-
The dead are waking underneathJ
Their prison door is rent awayH
And ghastly with the seal of deathF
They wander in the eye of dayH
The temple of the CherubimG
The House of God is cold and dimG
A curse is on its trembling wallsA
Its mighty veil asunder fallsA
-
Well may the cavern depths of EarthK
Be shaken and her mountains nodL
Well may the sheeted dead come forthM
To see the suffering son of GodL
Well may the temple shrine grow dimG
And shadows veil the CherubimG
When He the chosen one of HeavenC
A sacrifice for guilt is givenC
-
And shall the sinful heart aloneN
Behold unmoved the fearful hourO
When Nature trembled on her throneN
And Death resigned his iron powerO
Oh shall the heart whose sinfulnessA
Gave keenness to His sore distressA
And added to His tears of bloodP
Refuse its trembling gratitudeQ
