The Christmas Of 1888 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCCB DDEFFE GGEEEE HHIJJI KKEJJE

Low in the east against a white cold dawnA
The black lined silhouette of the woods was drawnA
And on a wintry wasteB
Of frosted streams and hillsides bare and brownC
Through thin cloud films a pallid ghost looked downC
The waning moon half facedB
-
In that pale sky and sere snow waiting earthD
What sign was there of the immortal birthD
What herald of the OneE
Lo swift as thought the heavenly radiance cameF
A rose red splendor swept the sky like flameF
Up rolled the round bright sunE
-
And all was changed From a transfigured worldG
The moon's ghost fled the smoke of home hearths curledG
Up the still air unblownE
In Orient warmth and brightness did that mornE
O'er Nain and Nazareth when the Christ was bornE
Break fairer than our ownE
-
The morning's promise noon and eve fulfilledH
In warm soft sky and landscape hazy hilledH
And sunset fair as theyI
A sweet reminder of His holiest timeJ
A summer miracle in our winter climeJ
God gave a perfect dayI
-
The near was blended with the old and farK
And Bethlehem's hillside and the Magi's starK
Seemed here as there and thenE
Our homestead pine tree was the Syrian palmJ
Our heart's desire the angels' midnight psalmJ
Peace and good will to menE
