The Battle Autumn Of 1862 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

The flags of war like storm birds flyA
The charging trumpets blowB
Yet rolls no thunder in the skyA
No earthquake strives belowB
-
And calm and patient Nature keepsC
Her ancient promises wellD
Though o'er her bloom and greenness sweepsC
The battle's breath of hellD
-
And still she walks in golden hoursE
Through harvest happy farmsF
And still she wears her fruits and flowersE
Like jewels on her armsF
-
What means the gladness of the plainG
This joy of eve and mornH
The mirth that shakes the bread of grainG
And yellow locks of cornH
-
Ah eyes may well be full of tearsI
And hearts with hate are hotJ
But even paced come round the yearsK
And nature changes notJ
-
She meets with smiles our bitter griefL
With songs our groans of painG
She mocks with tints of flowers and leafL
The war field's crimson stainG
-
Still in the cannon's pause we hearM
Her sweet thanksgiving psalmN
Too near to God for doubt or fearO
She shares the eternal calmP
-
She knows the seed lies safe belowB
The fires that blast and burnQ
For all the tears of blood we sowR
She waits the rich returnQ
-
She sees with clearer eye than oursE
The good of suffering bornH
The hearts that blossom like her flowersE
And ripen like her cornH
-
Oh give to us in times like theseS
The vision of her eyesT
And make her fields and fruited treesS
Our golden propheciesS
-
Oh give to us her finer earM
Above this stormy dinU
We too would hear the bells of cheerO
Ring peace and freedom inU
