Spare me dread angel of reproofA
And let the sunshine weave to dayB
Its gold threads in the warp and woofA
Of life so poor and grayB
-
Spare me awhile the flesh is weakC
These lingering feet that fain would strayB
Among the flowers shall some day seekC
The strait and narrow wayB
-
Take off thy ever watchful eyeD
The awe of thy rebuking frownE
The dullest slave at times must sighD
To fling his burdens downE
-
To drop his galley's straining oarF
And press in summer warmth and calmG
The lap of some enchanted shoreF
Of blossom and of balmG
-
Grudge not my life its hour of bloomH
My heart its taste of long desireI
This day be mine be those to comeJ
As duty shall requireI
-
The deep voice answered to my ownK
Smiting my selfish prayers awayB
'To morrow is with God aloneK
And man hath but to dayB
-
'Say not thy fond vain heart withinL
The Father's arm shall still be wideM
When from these pleasant ways of sinL
Thou turn'st at eventideM
-
''Cast thyself down ' the tempter saithN
'And angels shall thy feet upbear '-
He bids thee make a lie of faithN
And blasphemy of prayerO
-
'Though God be good and free be heavenP
No force divine can love compelQ
And though the song of sins forgivenP
May sound through lowest hellQ
-
'The sweet persuasion of His voiceR
Respects thy sanctity of willS
He giveth day thou hast thy choiceR
To walk in darkness stillS
-
'As one who turning from the lightM
Watches his own gray shadow fallT
Doubting upon his path of nightM
If there be day at allT
-
'No word of doom may shut thee outM
No wind of wrath may downward whirlU
No swords of fire keep watch aboutM
The open gates of pearlU
-
'A tenderer light than moon or sunP
Than song of earth a sweeter hymnV
May shine and sound forever onW
And thou be deaf and dimV
-
'Forever round the Mercy seatM
The guiding lights of Love shall burnX
But what if habit bound thy feetM
Shall lack the will to turnX
-
'What if thine eye refuse to seeY
Thine ear of Heaven's free welcome failZ
And thou a willing captive beY
Thyself thy own dark jailZ
-
'Oh doom beyond the saddest guessA2
As the long years of God unrollZ
To make thy dreary selfishnessB2
The prison of a soulZ
-
'To doubt the love that fain would breakC2
The fetters from thy self bound limbV
And dream that God can thee forsakeC2
As thou forsakest Him '-
