Lake WinnipesaukeeA
-
-
I NOONB
-
White clouds whose shadows haunt the deepC
Light mists whose soft embraces keepC
The sunshine on the hills asleepC
-
O isles of calm O dark still woodD
And stiller skies that overbroodD
Your rest with deeper quietudeD
-
O shapes and hues dim beckoning throughE
Yon mountain gaps my longing viewE
Beyond the purple and the blueE
-
To stiller sea and greener landD
And softer lights and airs more blandD
And skies the hollow of God's handD
-
Transfused through you O mountain friendsF
With mine your solemn spirit blendsF
And life no more hath separate endsF
-
I read each misty mountain signG
I know the voice of wave and pineG
And I am yours and ye are mineG
-
Life's burdens fall its discords ceaseH
I lapse into the glad releaseH
Of Nature's own exceeding peaceH
-
O welcome calm of heart and mindD
As falls yon fir tree's loosened rindD
To leave a tenderer growth behindD
-
So fall the weary years awayI
A child again my head I layI
Upon the lap of this sweet dayI
-
This western wind hath Lethean powersJ
Yon noonday cloud nepenthe showersJ
The lake is white with lotus flowersJ
-
Even Duty's voice is faint and lowK
And slumberous Conscience waking slowK
Forgets her blotted scroll to showK
-
The Shadow which pursues us allL
Whose ever nearing steps appallL
Whose voice we hear behind us callL
-
That Shadow blends with mountain grayI
It speaks but what the light waves sayI
Death walks apart from Fear to dayI
-
Rocked on her breast these pines and IM
Alike on Nature's love relyM
And equal seems to live or dieM
-
Assured that He whose presence fillsN
With light the spaces of these hillsN
No evil to His creatures willsN
-
The simple faith remains that HeO
Will do whatever that may beO
The best alike for man and treeO
-
What mosses over one shall growK
What light and life the other knowK
Unanxious leaving Him to showK
-
-
-
II EVENINGA
-
Yon mountain's side is black with nightD
While broad orhed o'er its gleaming crownP
The moon slow rounding into sightD
On the hushed inland sea looks downP
-
How start to light the clustering islesQ
Each silver hemmed How sharply showK
The shadows of their rocky pilesQ
And tree tops in the wave belowK
-
How far and strange the mountains seemR
Dim looming through the pale still lightD
The vague vast grouping of a dreamR
They stretch into the solemn nightD
-
Beneath lake wood and peopled valeS
Hushed by that presence grand and graveT
Are silent save the cricket's wailS
And low response of leaf and waveT
-
Fair scenes whereto the Day and NightD
Make rival love I leave ye soonB
What time before the eastern lightD
The pale ghost of the setting moonB
-
Shall hide behind yon rocky spinesU
And the young archer Morn shall breakA
His arrows on the mountain pinesU
And golden sandalled walk the lakeA
-
Farewell around this smiling bayI
Gay hearted Health and Life in bloomV
With lighter steps than mine may strayI
In radiant summers yet to comeW
-
But none shall more regretful leaveX
These waters and these hills than IM
Or distant fonder dream how eveX
Or dawn is painting wave and skyM
-
How rising moons shine sad and mildD
On wooded isle and silvering bayI
Or setting suns beyond the piledD
And purple mountains lead the dayI
-
Nor laughing girl nor bearding boyY
Nor full pulsed manhood lingering hereZ
Shall add to life's abounding joyY
The charmed repose to suffering dearA2
-
Still waits kind Nature to impartD
Her choicest gifts to such as gainB2
An entrance to her loving heartD
Through the sharp discipline of painB2
-
Forever from the Hand that takesC2
One blessing from us others fallL
And soon or late our Father makesC2
His perfect recompense to allL
-
Oh watched by Silence and the NightD
And folded in the strong embraceD2
Of the great mountains with the lightD
Of the sweet heavens upon thy faceD2
-
Lake of the Northland keep thy dowerE2
Of beauty still and while aboveF2
Thy solemn mountains speak of powerG2
Be thou the mirror of God's loveF2
