I NOONA
White clouds whose shadows haunt the deepB
Light mists whose soft embraces keepB
The sunshine on the hills asleepB
-
O isles of calm O dark still woodC
And stiller skies that overbroodC
Your rest with deeper quietudeC
-
O shapes and hues dim beckoning throughD
Yon mountain gaps my longing viewD
Beyond the purple and the blueD
-
To stiller sea and greener landC
And softer lights and airs more blandC
And skies the hollow of God's handC
-
Transfused through you O mountain friendsE
With mine your solemn spirit blendsE
And life no more hath separate endsE
-
I read each misty mountain signF
I know the voice of wave and pineF
And I am yours and ye are mineF
-
Life's burdens fall its discords ceaseG
I lapse into the glad releaseG
Of Nature's own exceeding peaceG
-
O welcome calm of heart and mindC
As falls yon fir tree's loosened rindC
To leave a tenderer growth behindC
-
So fall the weary years awayH
A child again my head I layH
Upon the lap of this sweet dayH
-
This western wind hath Lethean powersI
Yon noonday cloud nepenthe showersI
The lake is white with lotus flowersI
-
Even Duty's voice is faint and lowJ
And slumberous Conscience waking slowJ
Forgets her blotted scroll to showJ
-
The Shadow which pursues us allK
Whose ever nearing steps appallK
Whose voice we hear behind us callK
-
That Shadow blends with mountain grayH
It speaks but what the light waves sayH
Death walks apart from Fear to dayH
-
Rocked on her breast these pines and IL
Alike on Nature's love relyL
And equal seems to live or dieL
-
Assured that He whose presence fillsM
With light the spaces of these hillsM
No evil to His creatures willsM
-
The simple faith remains that HeN
Will do whatever that may beN
The best alike for man and treeN
-
What mosses over one shall growJ
What light and life the other knowJ
Unanxious leaving Him to showJ
-
-
II EVENINGO
Yon mountain's side is black with nightC
While broad orhed o'er its gleaming crownP
The moon slow rounding into sightC
On the hushed inland sea looks downP
-
How start to light the clustering islesQ
Each silver hemmed How sharply showJ
The shadows of their rocky pilesQ
And tree tops in the wave belowJ
-
How far and strange the mountains seemR
Dim looming through the pale still lightC
The vague vast grouping of a dreamR
They stretch into the solemn nightC
-
Beneath lake wood and peopled valeS
Hushed by that presence grand and graveT
Are silent save the cricket's wailS
And low response of leaf and waveT
-
Fair scenes whereto the Day and NightC
Make rival love I leave ye soonA
What time before the eastern lightC
The pale ghost of the setting moonA
-
Shall hide behind yon rocky spinesU
And the young archer Morn shall breakV
His arrows on the mountain pinesU
And golden sandalled walk the lakeV
-
Farewell around this smiling bayH
Gay hearted Health and Life in bloomW
With lighter steps than mine may strayH
In radiant summers yet to comeX
-
But none shall more regretful leaveY
These waters and these hills than IL
Or distant fonder dream how eveY
Or dawn is painting wave and skyL
-
How rising moons shine sad and mildC
On wooded isle and silvering bayH
Or setting suns beyond the piledC
And purple mountains lead the dayH
-
Nor laughing girl nor bearding boyZ
Nor full pulsed manhood lingering hereA2
Shall add to life's abounding joyZ
The charmed repose to suffering dearB2
-
Still waits kind Nature to impartC
Her choicest gifts to such as gainC2
An entrance to her loving heartC
Through the sharp discipline of painC2
-
Forever from the Hand that takesD2
One blessing from us others fallK
And soon or late our Father makesD2
His perfect recompense to allK
-
Oh watched by Silence and the NightC
And folded in the strong embraceE2
Of the great mountains with the lightC
Of the sweet heavens upon thy faceE2
-
Lake of the Northland keep thy dowerF2
Of beauty still and while aboveG2
Thy solemn mountains speak of powerH2
Be thou the mirror of God's loveG2
