Still as of old in Beavor's ValeA
O man of God our hope and faithB
The Elements and Stars assailA
And the awed spirit holds its breathC
Blown over by a wind of deathC
-
Takes Nature thought for such as weD
What place her human atom fillsE
The weed drift of her careless seaD
The mist on her unheeding hillsE
What reeks she of our helpless willsE
-
Strange god of Force with fear not loveF
Its trembling worshipper Can prayerG
Reach the shut ear of Fate or moveH
Unpitying Energy to spareG
What doth the cosmic Vastness careG
-
In vain to this dread UnconcernI
For the All Father's love we lookJ
In vain in quest of it we turnI
The storied leaves of Nature's bookJ
The prints her rocky tablets tookJ
-
I pray for faith I long to trustK
I listen with my heart and hearL
A Voice without a sound 'Be justK
Be true be merciful revereM
The Word within thee God is nearM
-
'A light to sky and earth unknownN
Pales all their lights a mightier forceO
Than theirs the powers of Nature ownN
And to its goal as at its sourceO
His Spirit moves the UniverseP
-
'Believe and trust Through stars and sunsQ
Through life and death through soul and senseR
His wise paternal purpose runsQ
The darkness of His providenceS
Is star lit with benign intents '-
-
O joy supreme I know the VoiceT
Like none beside on earth or seaD
Yea more O soul of mine rejoiceT
By all that He requires of meD
I know what God himself must beD
-
No picture to my aid I callU
I shape no image in my prayerG
I only know in Him is allU
Of life light beauty everywhereG
Eternal Goodness here and thereG
-
I know He is and what He isV
Whose one great purpose is the goodW
Of all I rest my soul on HisV
Immortal Love and FatherhoodW
And trust Him as His children shouldW
-
I fear no more The clouded faceX
Of Nature smiles through all her thingsY
Of time and space and sense I traceX
The moving of the Spirit's wingsY
And hear the song of hope she singsY

Bond Perry: This is a powerful affirmation of the mystery of the universe....for indeed, ' "we are held in love and mystery greater than we can ever know or understand" When asked if I believe in God...I get all tongue tied....but this poem speaks to me.
