Rabbi Ismael Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEFFGHIHIDBBJJK KLMLBND

THE Rabbi Ishmael with the woe and sinA
Of the world heavy upon him entering inA
The Holy of Holies saw an awful FaceB
With terrible splendor filling all the placeB
'O Ishmael Ben Elisha ' said a voiceC
'What seekest thou What blessing is thy choice 'D
And knowing that he stood before the LordE
Within the shadow of the cherubimF
Wide winged between the blinding light and himF
He bowed himself and uttered not a wordG
But in the silence of his soul was prayerH
'O Thou Eternal I am one of allI
And nothing ask that others may not shareH
Thou art almighty we are weak and smallI
And yet Thy children let Thy mercy spare 'D
Trembling he raised his eyes and in the placeB
Of the insufferable glory lo a faceB
Of more than mortal tenderness that bentJ
Graciously down in token of assentJ
And smiling vanished With strange joy elateK
The wondering Rabbi sought the temple's gateK
Radiant as Moses from the Mount he stoodL
And cried aloud unto the multitudeM
'O Israel hear The Lord our God is goodL
Mine eyes have seen his glory and his graceB
Beyond his judgments shall his love endureN
The mercy of the All Merciful is sure 'D
