Immortal Love forever fullA
Forever flowing freeB
Forever shared forever wholeC
A never ebbing seaB
-
Our outward lips confess the nameD
All other names aboveE
Love only knoweth whence it cameD
And comprehendeth loveE
-
Blow winds of God awake and blowF
The mists of earth awayG
Shine out O Light Divine and showF
How wide and far we strayG
-
Hush every lip close every bookH
The strife of tongues forbearG
Why forward reach or backward lookH
For love that clasps like airG
-
We may not climb the heavenly steepsB
To bring the Lord Christ downI
In vain we search the lowest deepsB
For Him no depths can drownI
-
Nor holy bread nor blood of grapeJ
The lineaments restoreG
Of Him we know in outward shapeJ
And in the flesh no moreG
-
He cometh not a king to reignK
The world's long hope is dimL
The weary centuries watch in vainK
The clouds of heaven for HimL
-
Death comes life goes the asking eyeM
And ear are answerlessB
The grave is dumb the hollow skyM
Is sad with silentnessB
-
The letter fails and systems fallN
And every symbol wanesB
The Spirit over brooding allN
Eternal Love remainsB
-
And not for signs in heaven aboveE
Or earth below they lookH
Who know with John His smile of loveE
With Peter His rebukeO
-
In joy of inward peace or senseB
Of sorrow over sinP
He is His own best evidenceB
His witness is withinP
-
No fable old nor mythic loreG
Nor dream of bards and seersB
No dead fact stranded on the shoreG
Of the oblivious yearsB
-
But warm sweet tender even yetQ
A present help is HeB
And faith has still its OlivetQ
And love its GalileeB
-
The healing of His seamless dressB
Is by our beds of painK
We touch Him in life's throng and pressB
And we are whole againR
-
Through Him the first fond prayers are saidQ
Our lips of childhood frameD
The last low whispers of our deadQ
Are burdened with His nameD
-
Our Lord and Master of us allN
Whate'er our name or signS
We own Thy sway we hear Thy callN
We test our lives by ThineS
-
Thou judgest us Thy purityB
Doth all our lusts condemnT
The love that draws us nearer TheeB
Is hot with wrath to themT
-
Our thoughts lie open to Thy sightQ
And naked to Thy glanceB
Our secret sins are in the lightQ
Of Thy pure countenanceB
-
Thy healing pains a keen distressB
Thy tender light shines inP
Thy sweetness is the bitternessB
Thy grace the pang of sinP
-
Yet weak and blinded though we beB
Thou dost our service ownU
We bring our varying gifts to TheeB
And Thou rejectest noneV
-
To Thee our full humanityB
Its joys and pains belongW
The wrong of man to man on TheeB
Inflicts a deeper wrongW
-
Who hates hates Thee who loves becomesB
Therein to Thee alliedQ
All sweet accords of hearts and homesB
In Thee are multipliedQ
-
Deep strike Thy roots O heavenly VineS
Within our earthly sodQ
Most human and yet most divineS
The flower of man and GodQ
-
O Love O Life Our faith and sightQ
Thy presence maketh oneV
As through transfigured clouds of whiteQ
We trace the noon day sunV
-
So to our mortal eyes subduedQ
Flesh veiled but not concealedQ
We know in Thee the fatherhoodQ
And heart of God revealedQ
-
We faintly hear we dimly seeB
In differing phrase we prayG
But dim or clear we own in TheeB
The Light the Truth the WayG
-
The homage that we render TheeB
Is still our Father's ownU
No jealous claim or rivalryB
Divides the Cross and ThroneU
-
To do Thy will is more than praiseB
As words are less than deedsB
And simple trust can find Thy waysB
We miss with chart of creedsB
-
No pride of self Thy service hathX
No place for me and mineS
Our human strength is weakness deathY
Our life apart from ThineS
-
Apart from Thee all gain is lossB
All labor vainly doneV
The solemn shadow of Thy CrossB
Is better than the sunV
-
Alone O Love ineffableZ
Thy saving name is givenV
To turn aside from Thee is hellA2
To walk with Thee is heavenV
-
How vain secure in all Thou artQ
Our noisy championshipB2
The sighing of the contrite heartQ
Is more than flattering lipB2
-
Not Thine the bigot's partial pleaB
Nor Thine the zealot's banC2
Thou well canst spare a love of TheeB
Which ends in hate of manC2
-
Our Friend our Brother and our LordQ
What may Thy service beB
Nor name nor form nor ritual wordQ
But simply following TheeB
-
We bring no ghastly holocaustQ
We pile no graven stoneU
He serves thee best who loveth mostQ
His brothers and Thy ownU
-
Thy litanies sweet officesB
Of love and gratitudeQ
Thy sacramental liturgiesB
The joy of doing goodQ
-
In vain shall waves of incense driftQ
The vaulted nave aroundQ
In vain the minster turret liftQ
Its brazen weights of soundQ
-
The heart must ring Thy Christmas bellsB
Thy inward altars raiseB
Its faith and hope Thy canticlesB
And its obedience praiseB
