Beneath the moonlight and the snowA
Lies dead my latest yearB
The winter winds are wailing lowA
Its dirges in my earC
-
I grieve not with the moaning windD
As if a loss befellE
Before me even as behindD
God is and all is wellE
-
His light shines on me from aboveF
His low voice speaks withinG
The patience of immortal loveF
Outwearying mortal sinG
-
Not mindless of the growing yearsH
Of care and loss and painI
My eyes are wet with thankful tearsJ
For blessings which remainI
-
If dim the gold of life has grownK
I will not count it drossL
Nor turn from treasures still my ownK
To sigh for lack and lossL
-
The years no charm from Nature takeM
As sweet her voices callN
As beautiful her mornings breakM
As fair her evenings fallN
-
Love watches o'er my quiet waysO
Kind voices speak my nameP
And lips that find it hard to praiseO
Are slow at least to blameP
-
How softly ebb the tides of willQ
How fields once lost or wonR
Now lie behind me green and stillQ
Beneath a level sunR
-
How hushed the hiss of party hateS
The clamor of the throngT
How old harsh voices of debateS
Flow into rhythmic songT
-
Methinks the spirit's temper growsU
Too soft in this still airV
Somewhat the restful heart foregoesU
Of needed watch and prayerV
-
The bark by tempest vainly tossedW
May founder in the calmX
And he who braved the polar frostW
Faint by the isles of balmX
-
Better than self indulgent yearsU
The outflung heart of youthY
Than pleasant songs in idle earsU
The tumult of the truthY
-
Rest for the weary hands is goodZ
And love for hearts that pineA2
But let the manly habitudeZ
Of upright souls be mineA2
-
Let winds that blow from heaven refreshB2
Dear Lord the languid airV
And let the weakness of the fleshB2
Thy strength of spirit shareV
-
And if the eye must fail of lightZ
The ear forget to hearC
Make clearer still the spirit's sightZ
More fine the inward earC
-
Be near me in mine hours of needZ
To soothe or cheer or warnC2
And down these slopes of sunset leadZ
As up the hills of mornC2
