Mithridates At Chios Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCBADEEEEFGHIIHGJK LGKJGMNGMOPQRRQS

KNOW'ST thou O slave cursed landA
How when the Chian's cup of guiltB
Was full to overflow there cameC
God's justice in the sword of flameC
That red with slaughter to its hiltB
Blazed in the Cappadocian victor's handA
The heavens are still and farD
But not unheard of awful JoveE
The sighing of the island slaveE
Was answered when the gean waveE
The keels of Mithridates cloveE
And the vines shrivelled in the breath of warF
'Robbers of Chios hark 'G
The victor cried 'to Heaven's decreeH
Pluck your last cluster from the vineI
Drain your last cup of Chian wineI
Slaves of your slaves your doom shall beH
In Colchian mines by Phasis rolling dark 'G
Then rose the long lamentJ
From the hoar sea god's dusky cavesK
The priestess rent her hair and criedL
'Woe woe The gods are sleepless eyed 'G
And chained and scourged the slaves of slavesK
The lords of Chios into exile wentJ
'The gods at last pay well 'G
So Hellas sang her taunting songM
'The fisher in his net is caughtN
The Chian hath his master bought 'G
And isle from isle with laughter longM
Took up and sped the mocking parableO
Once more the slow dumb yearsP
Bring their avenging cycle roundQ
And more than Hellas taught of oldR
Our wiser lesson shall be toldR
Of slaves uprising freedom crownedQ
To break not wield the scourge wet with their blood and tearsS
