A
-
No Berserk thirst of blood had theyB
No battle joy was theirs who setC
Against the alien bayonetC
Their homespun breasts in that old dayB
-
Their feet had trodden peaceful waysD
They loved not strife they dreaded painE
They saw not what to us is plainE
That God would make man's wrath his praiseD
-
No seers were they but simple menF
Its vast results the future hidG
The meaning of the work they didG
Was strange and dark and doubtful thenF
-
Swift as their summons came they leftH
The plough mid furrow standing stillI
The half ground corn grist in the millI
The spade in earth the axe in cleftH
-
They went where duty seemed to callJ
They scarcely asked the reason whyK
They only knew they could but dieK
And death was not the worst of allJ
-
Of man for man the sacrificeL
All that was theirs to give they gaveM
The flowers that blossomed from their graveM
Have sown themselves beneath all skiesN
-
Their death shot shook the feudal towerO
And shattered slavery's chain as wellP
On the sky's dome as on a bellP
Its echo struck the world's great hourO
-
That fateful echo is not dumbQ
The nations listening to its soundR
Wait from a century's vantage groundR
The holier triumphs yet to comeQ
-
The bridal time of Law and LoveS
The gladness of the world's releaseT
When war sick at the feet of PeaceT
The hawk shall nestle with the doveS
-
The golden age of brotherhoodU
Unknown to other rivalriesV
Than of the mild humanitiesV
And gracious interchange of goodU
-
When closer strand shall lean to strandW
Till meet beneath saluting flagsX
The eagle of our mountain cragsX
The lion of our MotherlandW
