Out from JerusalemA
The king rode with his greatB
War chiefs and lords of stateB
And Sheba's queen with themC
-
Comely but black withalD
To whom perchance belongsE
That wondrous Song of songsE
Sensuous and mysticalD
-
Whereto devout souls turnF
In fond ecstatic dreamG
And through its earth born themeG
The Love of loves discernF
-
Proud in the Syrian sunH
In gold and purple sheenI
The dusky Ethiop queenI
Smiled on King SolomonH
-
Wisest of men he knewJ
The languages of allD
The creatures great or smallD
That trod the earth or flewJ
-
Across an ant hill ledK
The king's path and he heardL
Its small folk and their wordL
He thus interpretedM
-
'Here comes the king men greetN
As wise and good and justO
To crush us in the dustO
Under his heedless feet '-
-
The great king bowed his headK
And saw the wide surpriseP
Of the Queen of Sheba's eyesP
As he told her what they saidK
-
'O king ' she whispered sweetN
'Too happy fate have theyQ
Who perish in thy wayQ
Beneath thy gracious feetN
-
'Thou of the God lent crownR
Shall these vile creatures dareS
Murmur against thee whereS
The knees of kings kneel down '-
-
'Nay ' Solomon repliedT
'The wise and strong should seekU
The welfare of the weak '-
And turned his horse asideT
-
His train with quick alarmV
Curved with their leader roundW
The ant hill's peopled moundW
And left it free from harmV
-
The jewelled head bent lowD
'O king ' she said 'henceforthQ
The secret of thy worthQ
And wisdom well I knowD
-
'Happy must be the StateB
Whose ruler heedeth moreX
The murmurs of the poorY
Than flatteries of the great '-
