-
-
BUILD at Kallundborg by the seaD
A church as stately as church may beD
And there shalt thou wed my daughter fairE
Said the Lord of Nesvek to Esbern SnareE
-
And the Baron laughed But Esbern saidB
Though I lose my soul I will Helva wedB
And off he strode in his pride of willF
To the Troll who dwelt in Ulshoi hillF
-
Build O Troll a church for meD
At Kallundborg by the mighty seaD
Build it stately and build it fairE
Build it quickly said Esbern SnareE
-
But the sly Dwarf said No work is wroughtG
By Trolls of the Hills O man for naughtG
What wilt thou give for thy church so fairE
Set thy own price quoth Esbern SnareE
-
When Kallundborg church is builded wellH
Thou must the name of its builder tellH
Or thy heart and thy eyes must be my boonI
Build said Esbern and build it soonI
-
By night and by day the Troll wrought onJ
He hewed the timbers he piled the stoneK
But day by day as the walls rose fairE
Darker and sadder grew Esbern SnareE
-
He listened by night he watched by dayL
He sought and thought but he dared not prayL
In vain he called on the Elle maids shyM
And the Neck and the Nis gave no replyM
-
Of his evil bargain far and wideN
A rumor ran through the country sideN
And Helva of Nesvek young and fairE
Prayed for the soul of Esbern SnareE
-
And now the church was wellnigh doneO
One pillar it lacked and one aloneK
And the grim Troll muttered Fool thou artP
To morrow gives me thy eyes and heartP
-
By Kallundborg in black despairE
Through wood and meadow walked Esbern SnareE
Till worn and weary the strong man sankQ
Under the birches on Ulshoi bankQ
-
At his last day's work he heard the TrollR
Hammer and delve in the quarry's holeR
Before him the church stood large and fairE
I have builded my tomb said Esbern SnareE
-
And he closed his eyes the sight to hideN
When he heard a light step at his sideN
O Esbern Snare a sweet voice saidB
Would I might die now in thy steadB
-
With a grasp by love and by fear made strongS
He held her fast and he held her longS
With the beating heart of a bird afeardB
She hid her face in his flame red beardB
-
O love he cried let me look to dayB
In thine eyes ere mine are plucked awayB
Let me hold thee close let me feel thy heartB
Ere mine by the Troll is torn apartB
-
I sinned O Helva for love of theeD
Pray that the Lord Christ pardon meD
But fast as she prayed and faster stillF
Hammered the Troll in Ulshoi hillF
-
He knew as he wrought that a loving heartB
Was somehow baffling his evil artB
For more than spell of Elf or TrollR
Is a maiden's prayer for her lover's soulR
-
And Esbern listened and caught the soundB
Of a Troll wife singing undergroundB
To morrow comes Fine father thineT
Lie still and hush thee baby mineT
-
Lie still my darling next sunriseU
Thou'lt play with Esbern Snare's heart and eyesU
Ho ho quoth Esbern is that your gameV
Thanks to the Troll wife I know his nameV
-
The Troll he heard him and hurried onJ
To Kallundborg church with the lacking stoneK
Too late Gaffer Fine cried Esbern SnareE
And Troll and pillar vanished in airE
-
That night the harvesters heard the soundB
Of a woman sobbing undergroundB
And the voice of the Hill Troll loud with blameV
Of the careless singer who told his nameV
-
Of the Troll of the Church they sing the runeI
By the Northern Sea in the harvest moonI
And the fishers of Zealand hear him stillF
Scolding his wife in Ulshoi hillF
-
And seaward over its groves of birchW
Still looks the tower of Kallundborg churchW
Where first at its altar a wedded pairE
Stood Helva of Nesvek and Esbern SnareE
