O dwellers in the stately townsA
What come ye out to seeB
This common earth this common skyC
This water flowing freeB
-
As gayly as these kalmia flowersD
Your door yard blossoms springE
As sweetly as these wild wood birdsF
Your caged minstrels singE
-
You find but common bloom and greenG
The rippling river's runeH
The beauty which is everywhereI
Beneath the skies of JuneH
-
The Hawkswood oaks the storm torn plumesJ
Of old pine forest kingsK
Beneath whose century woven shadeL
Deer Island's mistress singsK
-
And here are pictured ArtichokeM
And Curson's bowery millN
And Pleasant Valley smiles betweenG
The river and the hillN
-
You know full well these banks of bloomO
The upland's wavy lineP
And how the sunshine tips with fireQ
The needles of the pineP
-
Yet like some old remembered psalmR
Or sweet familiar faceS
Not less because of commonnessS
You love the day and placeS
-
And not in vain in this soft airI
Shall hard strung nerves relaxS
Not all in vain the o'erworn brainT
Forego its daily taxS
-
The lust of power the greed of gainT
Have all the year their ownU
The haunting demons well may letV
Our one bright day aloneU
-
Unheeded let the newsboy callW
Aside the ledger layX
The world will keep its treadmill stepY
Though we fall out to dayX
-
The truants of life's weary schoolZ
Without excuse from thriftA2
We change for once the gains of toilB2
For God's unpurchased giftA2
-
From ceiled rooms from silent booksS
From crowded car and townC2
Dear Mother Earth upon thy lapD2
We lay our tired heads downC2
-
Cool summer wind our heated browsS
Blue river through the greenG
Of clustering pines refresh the eyesS
Which all too much have seenG
-
For us these pleasant woodland waysS
Are thronged with memories oldE2
Have felt the grasp of friendly handsS
And heard love's story toldE2
-
A sacred presence overbroodsS
The earth whereon we meetF2
These winding forest paths are trodG2
By more than mortal feetF2
-
Old friends called from us by the voiceS
Which they alone could hearH2
From mystery to mysteryB
From life to life draw nearI2
-
More closely for the sake of themJ2
Each other's hands we pressS
Our voices take from them a toneU
Of deeper tendernessS
-
Our joy is theirs their trust is oursS
Alike below aboveK2
Or here or there about us foldE2
The arms of one great loveK2
-
We ask to day no countersignU
No party names we ownU
Unlabelled individualL2
We bring ourselves aloneU
-
What cares the unconventioned woodM2
For pass words of the townU
The sound of fashion's shibbolethN2
The laughing waters drownU
-
Here cant forgets his dreary toneU
And care his face forlornU
The liberal air and sunshine laughO2
The bigot's zeal to scornU
-
From manhood's weary shoulder fallsS
His load of selfish caresS
And woman takes her rights as flowersS
And brooks and birds take theirsS
-
The license of the happy woodsS
The brook's release are oursS
The freedom of the unshamed windP2
Among the glad eyed flowersS
-
Yet here no evil thought finds placeS
Nor foot profane comes inU
Our grove like that of SamothraceS
Is set apart from sinU
-
We walk on holy ground aboveK2
A sky more holy smilesS
The chant of the beatitudesS
Swells down these leafy aislesS
-
Thanks to the gracious ProvidenceS
That brings us here once moreQ2
For memories of the good behindP2
And hopes of good beforeQ2
-
And if unknown to us sweet daysS
Of June like this must comeR2
Unseen of us these laurels clotheS2
The river banks with bloomO
-
And these green paths must soon be trodG2
By other feet than oursS
Full long may annual pilgrims comeR2
To keep the Feast of FlowersS
-
The matron be a girl once moreQ2
The bearded man a boyT2
And we in heaven's eternal JuneU
Be glad for earthly joyT2
