Have I not voyaged friend beloved with theeA
On the great waters of the unsounded seaA
Momently listening with suspended oarB
For the low rote of waves upon a shoreB
Changeless as heaven where never fog cloud driftsC
Over its windless wood nor mirage liftsC
The steadfast hills where never birds of doubtD
Sing to mislead and every dream dies outD
And the dark riddles which perplex us hereE
In the sharp solvent of its light are clearF
Thou knowest how vain our quest how soon or lateG
The baffling tides and circles of debateG
Swept back our bark unto its starting placeH
Where looking forth upon the blank gray spaceH
And round about us seeing with sad eyesI
The same old difficult hills and cloud cold skiesI
We said 'This outward search availeth notJ
To find Him He is farther than we thoughtK
Or haply nearer To this very spotJ
Whereon we wait this commonplace of homeL
As to the well of Jacob He may comeM
And tell us all things ' As I listened thereN
Through the expectant silences of prayerN
Somewhat I seemed to hear which hath to meA
Been hope strength comfort and I give it theeA
-
'The riddle of the world is understoodO
Only by him who feels that God is goodO
As only he can feel who makes his loveP
The ladder of his faith and climbs aboveP
On th' rounds of his best instincts draws no lineQ
Between mere human goodness and divineQ
But judging God by what in him is bestR
With a child's trust leans on a Father's breastR
And hears unmoved the old creeds babble stillS
Of kingly power and dread caprice of willS
Chary of blessing prodigal of curseT
The pitiless doomsman of the universeT
Can Hatred ask for love Can SelfishnessU
Invite to self denial Is He lessV
Than man in kindly dealing Can He breakW
His own great law of fatherhood forsakeW
And curse His children Not for earth and heavenX
Can separate tables of the law be givenX
No rule can bind which He himself deniesI
The truths of time are not eternal lies '-
-
So heard I and the chaos round me spreadY
To light and order grew and 'Lord ' I saidY
'Our sins are our tormentors worst of allZ
Felt in distrustful shame that dares not callZ
Upon Thee as our Father We have setA2
A strange god up but Thou remainest yetA2
All that I feel of pity Thou hast knownB2
Before I was my best is all Thy ownB2
From Thy great heart of goodness mine but drewC2
Wishes and prayers but Thou O Lord wilt doC2
In Thy own time by ways I cannot seeA
All that I feel when I am nearest Thee '-
