Hymn, Sung At Christmas By The Scholars Of St. Helena's Island, S.c. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDADEFEFGHGHIJIJ FKFKLBMB

Oh none in all the world beforeA
Were ever glad as weB
We're free on Carolina's shoreA
We're all at home and freeB
Thou Friend and Helper of the poorC
Who suffered for our sakeD
To open every prison doorA
And every yoke to breakD
Bend low Thy pitying face and mildE
And help us sing and prayF
The hand that blessed the little childE
Upon our foreheads layF
We hear no more the driver's hornG
No more the whip we fearH
This holy day that saw Thee bornG
Was never half so dearH
The very oaks are greener cladI
The waters brighter smileJ
Oh never shone a day so gladI
On sweet St Helen's IsleJ
We praise Thee in our songs to dayF
To Thee in prayer we callK
Make swift the feet and straight the wayF
Of freedom unto allK
Come once again O blessed LordL
Come walking on the seaB
And let the mainlands hear the wordM
That sets the islands freeB
