O THOU whose presence went beforeA
Our fathers in their weary wayB
As with Thy chosen moved of yoreA
The fire by night the cloud by dayB
When from each temple of the freeC
A nation's song ascends to HeavenD
Most Holy Father unto TheeC
May not our humble prayer be givenD
Thy children all though hue and formE
Are varied in Thine own good willF
With Thy own holy breathings warmE
And fashioned in Thine image stillF
We thank Thee Father hill and plainG
Around us wave their fruits once moreA
And clustered vine and blossomed grainG
Are bending round each cottage doorA
And peace is here and hope and loveH
Are round us as a mantle thrownI
And unto Thee supreme aboveH
The knee of prayer is bowed aloneI
But oh for those this day can bringJ
As unto us no joyful thrillF
For those who under Freedom's wingJ
Are bound in Slavery's fetters stillF
For those to whom Thy written wordK
Of light and love is never givenD
For those whose ears have never heardK
The promise and the hope of heavenD
For broken heart and clouded mindL
Whereon no human mercies fallM
Oh be Thy gracious love inclinedL
Who as a Father pitiest allM
And grant O Father that the timeN
Of Earth's deliverance may be nearO
When every land and tongue and climeN
The message of Thy love shall hearP
When smitten as with fire from heavenD
The captive's chain shall sink in dustQ
And to his fettered soul be givenD
The glorious freedom of the justQ
