Amidst these glorious works of ThineA
The solemn minarets of the pineA
And awful Shasta's icy shrineA
-
Where swell Thy hymns from wave and galeB
And organ thunders never failB
Behind the cataract's silver veilB
-
Our puny walls to Thee we raiseC
Our poor reed music sounds Thy praiseC
Forgive O Lord our childish waysC
-
For kneeling on these altar stairsD
We urge Thee not with selfish prayersD
Nor murmur at our daily caresD
-
Before Thee in an evil dayE
Our country's bleeding heart we layE
And dare not ask Thy hand to stayE
-
But through the war cloud pray to TheeF
For union but a union freeF
With peace that comes of purityF
-
That Thou wilt bare Thy arm to saveG
And smiting through this Red Sea waveG
Make broad a pathway for the slaveG
-
For us confessing all our needH
We trust nor rite nor word nor deedH
Nor yet the broken staff of creedH
-
Assured alone that Thou art goodI
To each as to the multitudeJ
Eternal Love and FatherhoodI
-
Weak sinful blind to Thee we kneelK
Stretch dumbly forth our hands and feelK
Our weakness is our strong appealK
-
So by these Western gates of EvenL
We wait to see with Thy forgivenM
The opening Golden Gate of HeavenM
-
Suffice it now In time to beF
Shall holier altars rise to TheeF
Thy Church our broad humanityF
-
White flowers of love its walls shall climbN
Soft bells of peace shall ring its chimeN
Its days shall all be holy timeN
-
A sweeter song shall then be heardO
The music of the world's accordP
Confessing Christ the Inward WordO
-
That song shall swell from shore to shoreQ
One hope one faith one love restoreQ
The seamless robe that Jesus woreQ
