Thou dwellest not O Lord of allA
In temples which thy children raiseB
Our work to thine is mean and smallA
And brief to thy eternal daysB
-
Forgive the weakness and the prideC
If marred thereby our gift may beD
For love at least has sanctifiedC
The altar that we rear to theeD
-
The heart and not the hand has wroughtC
From sunken base to tower aboveE
The image of a tender thoughtC
The memory of a deathless loveE
-
And though should never sound of speechF
Or organ echo from its wallA
Its stones would pious lessons teachF
Its shade in benedictions fallA
-
Here should the dove of peace be foundC
And blessings and not curses givenG
Nor strife profane nor hatred woundC
The mingled loves of earth and heavenG
-
Thou who didst soothe with dying breathH
The dear one watching by Thy crossI
Forgetful of the pains of deathH
In sorrow for her mighty lossI
-
In memory of that tender claimJ
O Mother born the offering takeK
And make it worthy of Thy nameJ
And bless it for a mother's sakeK
