Not unto us who did but seekA
The word that burned within to speakA
Not unto us this day belongB
The triumph and exultant songB
Upon us fell in early youthC
The burden of unwelcome truthC
And left us weak and frail and fewD
The censor's painful work to doD
Thenceforth our life a fight becameE
The air we breathed was hot with blameE
For not with gauged and softened toneF
We made the bondman's cause our ownF
We bore as Freedom's hope forlornG
The private hate the public scornG
Yet held through all the paths we trodH
Our faith in man and trust in GodH
We prayed and hoped but still with aweI
The coming of the sword we sawJ
We heard the nearing steps of doomK
We saw the shade of things to comeL
In grief which they alone can feelM
Who from a mother's wrong appealM
With blended lines of fear and hopeN
We cast our country's horoscopeN
For still within her house of lifeO
We marked the lurid sign of strifeO
And poisoning and imbittering allP
We saw the star of Wormwood fallP
Deep as our love for her becameE
Our hate of all that wrought her shameE
And if thereby with tongue and penQ
We erred we were but mortal menQ
We hoped for peace our eyes surveyR
The blood red dawn of Freedom's dayR
We prayed for love to loose the chainS
'T is shorn by battle's axe in twainS
Nor skill nor strength nor zeal of oursT
Has mined and heaved the hostile towersT
Not by our hands is turned the keyU
That sets the sighing captives freeU
A redder sea than Egypt's waveV
Is piled and parted for the slaveV
A darker cloud moves on in lightW
A fiercer fire is guide by nightW
The praise O Lord is Thine aloneF
In Thy own way Thy work is doneX
Our poor gifts at Thy feet we castY
To whom be glory first and lastY
