WITH clearer light Cross of the South shine forthA
In blue Brazilian skiesB
And thou O river cleaving half the earthC
From sunset to sunriseB
From the great mountains to the Atlantic wavesD
Thy joy's long anthem pourE
Yet a few years God make them less and slavesD
Shall shame thy pride no moreE
No fettereel feet thy shaded margins pressF
But all men shall walk freeG
Where thou the high priest of the wildernessH
Hast wedded sea to seaG
And thou great hearted ruler through whose mouthI
The word of God is saidJ
Once more 'Let there be light ' Son of the SouthI
Lift up thy honored headJ
Wear unashamed a crown by thy desertK
More than by birth thy ownL
Careless of watch and ward thou art begirtK
By grateful hearts aloneL
The moaned wall and battle ship may failM
But safe shall justice proveN
Stronger than greaves of brass or iron mailM
The panoply of loveO
Crowned doubly by man's blessing and God's graceP
Thy future is secureQ
Who frees a people makes his statue's placeP
In Time's Valhalla sureQ
Lo from his Neva's banks the Scythian CzarR
Stretches to thee his handK
Who with the pencil of the Northern starR
Wrote freedom on his landK
And he whose grave is holy by our calmS
And prairied SangamonL
From his gaunt hand shall drop the martyr's palmS
To greet thee with 'Well done 'T
And thou O Earth with smiles thy face make sweetK
And let thy wail be stilledK
To hear the Muse of prophecy repeatK
Her promise half fulfilledK
The Voice that spake at Nazareth speaks stillU
No sound thereof hath diedK
Alike thy hope and Heaven's eternal willU
Shall yet be satisfiedK
The years are slow the vision tarrieth longV
And far the end may beG
But one by one the fiends of ancient wrongV
Go out and leave thee freeG
