The Persian's flowery gifts the shrineA
Of fruitful Ceres charm no moreB
The woven wreaths of oak and pineA
Are dust along the Isthmian shoreB
-
But beauty hath its homage stillC
And nature holds us still in debtD
And woman's grace and household skillC
And manhood's toil are honored yetD
-
And we to day amidst our flowersE
And fruits have come to own againF
The blessings of the summer hoursE
The early and the latter rainG
-
To see our Father's hand once moreB
Reverse for us the plenteous hornH
Of autumn filled and running o'erI
With fruit and flower and golden cornH
-
Once more the liberal year laughs outJ
O'er richer stores than gems or goldK
Once more with harvest song and shoutJ
Is Nature's bloodless triumph toldK
-
Our common mother rests and singsL
Like Ruth among her garnered sheavesM
Her lap is full of goodly thingsL
Her brow is bright with autumn leavesM
-
Oh favors every year made newN
Oh gifts with rain and sunshine sentO
The bounty overruns our dueN
The fulness shames our discontentO
-
We shut our eyes the flowers bloom onP
We murmur but the corn ears fillC
We choose the shadow but the sunQ
That casts it shines behind us stillC
-
God gives us with our rugged soilR
The power to make it Eden fairS
And richer fruits to crown our toilR
Than summer wedded islands bearS
-
Who murmurs at his lot to dayT
Who scorns his native fruit and bloomU
Or sighs for dainties far awayT
Beside the bounteous board of homeV
-
Thank Heaven instead that Freedom's armW
Can change a rocky soil to goldK
That brave and generous lives can warmX
A clime with northern ices coldK
-
And let these altars wreathed with flowersE
And piled with fruits awake againF
Thanksgivings for the golden hoursE
The early and the latter rainG
