WRITTEN IN THE ALBUM OF A FRIENDA
-
On page of thine I cannot traceB
The cold and heartless commonplaceB
A statue's fixed and marble graceB
-
For ever as these lines I pennedA
Still with the thought of thee will blendA
That of some loved and common friendA
-
Who in life's desert track has madeC
His pilgrim tent with mine or strayedC
Beneath the same remembered shadeC
-
And hence my pen unfettered movesD
In freedom which the heart approvesD
The negligence which friendship lovesE
-
And wilt thou prize my poor gift lessF
For simple air and rustic dressF
And sign of haste and carelessnessG
-
Oh more than specious counterfeitH
Of sentiment or studied witH
A heart like thine should value itH
-
Yet half I fear my gift will beI
Unto thy book if not to theeI
Of more than doubtful courtesyI
-
A banished name from Fashion's sphereJ
A lay unheard of Beauty's earK
Forbid disowned what do they hereK
-
Upon my ear not all in vainL
Came the sad captive's clanking chainL
The groaning from his bed of painL
-
And sadder still I saw the woeM
Which only wounded spirits knowM
When Pride's strong footsteps o'er them goM
-
Spurned not alone in walks abroadN
But from the temples of the LordO
Thrust out apart like things abhorredO
-
Deep as I felt and stern and strongP
In words which Prudence smothered longP
My soul spoke out against the wrongP
-
Not mine alone the task to speakQ
Of comfort to the poor and weakQ
And dry the tear on Sorrow's cheekQ
-
But mingled in the conflict warmR
To pour the fiery breath of stormR
Through the harsh trumpet of ReformR
-
To brave Opinion's settled frownS
From ermined robe and saintly gownS
While wrestling reverenced Error downS
-
Founts gushed beside my pilgrim wayT
Cool shadows on the greensward layT
Flowers swung upon the bending sprayT
-
And broad and bright on either handU
Stretched the green slopes of Fairy landU
With Hope's eternal sunbow spannedU
-
Whence voices called me like the flowM
Which on the listener's ear will growM
Of forest streamlets soft and lowM
-
And gentle eyes which still retainL
Their picture on the heart and brainL
Smiled beckoning from that path of painL
-
In vain nor dream nor rest nor pauseV
Remain for him who round him drawsV
The battered mail of Freedom's causeW
-
From youthful hopes from each green spotX
Of young Romance and gentle ThoughtY
Where storm and tumult enter notX
-
From each fair altar where belongP
The offerings Love requires of SongP
In homage to her bright eyed throngP
-
With soul and strength with heart and handU
I turned to Freedom's struggling bandU
To the sad Helots of our landU
-
What marvel then that Fame should turnZ
Her notes of praise to those of scornA2
Her gifts reclaimed her smiles withdrawnB2
-
What matters it a few years moreC2
Life's surge so restless heretoforeC2
Shall break upon the unknown shoreC2
-
In that far land shall disappearJ
The shadows which we follow hereK
The mist wreaths of our atmosphereJ
-
Before no work of mortal handU
Of human will or strength expandU
The pearl gates of the Better LandU
-
Alone in that great love which gaveD2
Life to the sleeper of the graveD2
Resteth the power to seek and saveD2
-
Yet if the spirit gazing throughE2
The vista of the past can viewE2
One deed to Heaven and virtue trueE2
-
If through the wreck of wasted powersF2
Of garlands wreathed from Folly's bowersF2
Of idle aims and misspent hoursF2
-
The eye can note one sacred spotX
By Pride and Self profaned notX
A green place in the waste of thoughtY
-
Where deed or word hath rendered lessF
The sum of human wretchednessF
And Gratitude looks forth to blessF
-
The simple burst of tenderest feelingG2
From sad hearts worn by evil dealingG2
For blessing on the hand of healingG2
-
Better than Glory's pomp will beI
That green and blessed spot to meI
A palm shade in EternityI
-
Something of Time which may inviteH2
The purified and spiritual sightH2
To rest on with a calm delightH2
-
And when the summer winds shall sweepI2
With their light wings my place of sleepI2
And mosses round my headstone creepI2
-
If still as Freedom's rallying signJ2
Upon the young heart's altars shineJ2
The very fires they caught from mineJ2
-
If words my lips once uttered stillK2
In the calm faith and steadfast willK2
Of other hearts their work fulfilK2
-
Perchance with joy the soul may learnZ
These tokens and its eye discernZ
The fires which on those altars burnZ
-
A marvellous joy that even thenL2
The spirit hath its life againL2
In the strong hearts of mortal menL2
-
Take lady then the gift I bringG2
No gay and graceful offeringG2
No flower smile of the laughing springG2
-
Midst the green buds of Youth's fresh MayT
With Fancy's leaf enwoven bayT
My sad and sombre gift I layT
-
And if it deepens in thy mindM2
A sense of suffering human kindM2
The outcast and the spirit blindM2
-
Oppressed and spoiled on every sideN2
By Prejudice and Scorn and PrideN2
Life's common courtesies deniedN2
-
Sad mothers mourning o'er their trustO2
Children by want and misery nursedP2
Tasting life's bitter cup at firstP2
-
If to their strong appeals which comeQ2
From fireless hearth and crowded roomR2
And the close alley's noisome gloomR2
-
Though dark the hands upraised to theeI
In mute beseeching agonyI
Thou lend'st thy woman's sympathyI
-
Not vainly on thy gentle shrineJ2
Where Love and Mirth and Friendship twineJ2
Their varied gifts I offer mineJ2
