IA
FRIENDof the Slave and yet the friend of allB
Lover of peace yet ever foremost whenC
The need of battling Freedom called for menC
To plant the banner on the outer wallB
Gentle and kindly ever at distressD
Melted to more than woman's tendernessE
Yet firm and steadfast at his duty's postF
Fronting the violence of a maddened hostF
Like some gray rock from which the waves are tossedG
Knowing his deeds of love men questioned notH
The faith of one whose walk and word were rightI
Who tranquilly in Life's great task field wroughtJ
And side by side with evil scarcely caughtH
A stain upon his pilgrim garb of whiteI
Prompt to redress another's wrong his ownK
Leaving to Time and Truth and Penitence aloneK
IIA
Such was our friend Formed on the good old planL
A true and brave and downright honest manL
He blew no trumpet in the market placeM
Nor in the church with hypocritic faceM
Supplied with cant the lack of Christian graceM
Loathing pretence he did with cheerful willN
What others talked of while their hands were stillN
And while 'Lord Lord ' the pious tyrants criedO
Who in the poor their Master crucifiedO
His daily prayer far better understoodP
In acts than words was simply doing goodP
So calm so constant was his rectitudeQ
That by his loss alone we know its worthR
And feel how true a man has walked with us on earthR
