Chicago Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCC DEF GGHH IIJJ KKLL MMEE NNEE OPQQ RRSS TTPP

Men said at vespers 'All is well 'A
In one wild night the city fellB
Fell shrines of prayer and marts of gainC
Before the fiery hurricaneC
-
On threescore spires had sunset shoneD
Where ghastly sunrise looked on noneE
Men clasped each other's hands and saidF
'The City of the West is dead '-
-
Brave hearts who fought in slow retreatG
The fiends of fire from street to streetG
Turned powerless to the blinding glareH
The dumb defiance of despairH
-
A sudden impulse thrilled each wireI
That signalled round that sea of fireI
Swift words of cheer warm heart throbs cameJ
In tears of pity died the flameJ
-
From East from West from South and NorthK
The messages of hope shot forthK
And underneath the severing waveL
The world full handed reached to saveL
-
Fair seemed the old but fairer stillM
The new the dreary void shall fillM
With dearer homes than those o'erthrownE
For love shall lay each corner stoneE
-
Rise stricken city from thee throwN
The ashen sackcloth of thy woeN
And build as to Amphion's strainE
To songs of cheer thy walls againE
-
How shrivelled in thy hot distressO
The primal sin of selfishnessP
How instant rose to take thy partQ
The angel in the human heartQ
-
Ah not in vain the flames that tossedR
Above thy dreadful holocaustR
The Christ again has preached through theeS
The Gospel of HumanityS
-
Then lift once more thy towers on highT
And fret with spires the western skyT
To tell that God is yet with usP
And love is still miraculousP
