Between the gates of birth and deathA
An old and saintly pilgrim passedB
With look of one who witnessethA
The long sought goal at lastB
-
O thou whose reverent feet have foundC
The Master's footprints in thy wayD
And walked thereon as holy groundC
A boon of thee I prayD
-
'My lack would borrow thy excessE
My feeble faith the strength of thineF
I need thy soul's white saintlinessE
To hide the stains of mineF
-
'The grace and favor else deniedG
May well be granted for thy sake '-
So tempted doubting sorely triedG
A younger pilgrim spakeH
-
'Thy prayer my son transcends my giftI
No power is mine ' the sage repliedG
'The burden of a soul to liftI
Or stain of sin to hideG
-
'Howe'er the outward life may seemJ
For pardoning grace we all must prayD
No man his brother can redeemJ
Or a soul's ransom payD
-
'Not always age is growth of goodK
Its years have losses with their gainL
Against some evil youth withstoodK
Weak hands may strive in vainL
-
'With deeper voice than any speechM
Of mortal lips from man to manN
What earth's unwisdom may not teachM
The Spirit only canN
-
'Make thou that holy guide thine ownO
And following where it leads the wayD
The known shall lapse in the unknownO
As twilight into dayD
-
'The best of earth shall still remainL
And heaven's eternal years shall proveP
That life and death and joy and painL
Are ministers of Love '-
