Up from the meadows rich with cornA
Clear in the cool September mornA
-
The clustered spires of Frederick standB
Green walled by the hills of MarylandC
-
Round about them orchards sweepD
Apple and peach tree fruited deepD
-
Fair as the garden of the LordE
To the eyes of the famished rebel hordeE
-
On that pleasant morn of the early fallF
When Lee marched over the mountain wallF
-
Over the mountains winding downG
Horse and foot into Frederick townG
-
Forty flags with their silver starsH
Forty flags with their crimson barsH
-
Flapped in the morning wind the sunI
Of noon looked down and saw not oneI
-
Up rose old Barbara Frietchie thenJ
Bowed with her fourscore years and tenJ
-
Bravest of all in Frederick townG
She took up the flag the men hauled downG
-
In her attic window the staff she setK
To show that one heart was loyal yetK
-
Up the street came the rebel treadL
Stonewall Jackson riding aheadL
-
Under his slouched hat left and rightM
He glanced the old flag met his sightM
-
'Halt ' the dust brown ranks stood fastN
'Fire ' out blazed the rifle blastN
-
It shivered the window pane and sashO
It rent the banner with seam and gashO
-
Quick as it fell from the broken staffP
Dame Barbara snatched the silken scarfQ
-
She leaned far out on the window sillR
And shook it forth with a royal willR
-
'Shoot if you must this old gray headL
But spare your country's flag ' she saidL
-
A shade of sadness a blush of shameS
Over the face of the leader cameS
-
The nobler nature within him stirredT
To life at that woman's deed and wordT
-
'Who touches a hair of yon gray headL
Dies like a dog March on he saidL
-
All day long through Frederick streetU
Sounded the tread of marching feetU
-
All day long that free flag tostU
Over the heads of the rebel hostU
-
Ever its torn folds rose and fellV
On the loyal winds that loved it wellV
-
And through the hill gaps sunset lightU
Shone over it with a warm good nightU
-
Barbara Frietchie's work is o'erW
And the Rebel rides on his raids nor moreX
-
Honor to her and let a tearY
Fall for her sake on Stonewalls' bierZ
-
Over Barbara Frietchie's graveA2
Flag of Freedom and Union waveA2
-
Peace and order and beauty drawB2
Round they symbol of light and lawB2
-
And ever the stars above look downG
On thy stars below in Frederick townG
