Up from the meadows rich with cornA
Clear in the cool September mornA

On that pleasant morn of the early fallF
When Lee marched over the mountain wallF

Forty flags with their silver starsH
Forty flags with their crimson barsH

Flapped in the morning wind the sunI
Of noon looked down and saw not oneI

Up rose old Barbara Frietchie thenJ
Bowed with her fourscore years and tenJ

Bravest of all in Frederick townG
She took up the flag the men hauled downG

In her attic window the staff she setK
To show that one heart was loyal yetK

Up the street came the rebel treadL
Stonewall Jackson riding aheadL

Under his slouched hat left and rightM
He glanced the old flag met his sightM

'Halt ' the dust brown ranks stood fastN
'Fire ' out blazed the rifle blastN

It shivered the window pane and sashO
It rent the banner with seam and gashO

Quick as it fell from the broken staffP
Dame Barbara snatched the silken scarfQ

She leaned far out on the window sillR
And shook it forth with a royal willR

'Shoot if you must this old gray headL
But spare your country's flag ' she saidL

A shade of sadness a blush of shameS
Over the face of the leader cameS

The nobler nature within him stirredT
To life at that woman's deed and wordT

'Who touches a hair of yon gray headL
Dies like a dog March on he saidL

All day long through Frederick streetU
Sounded the tread of marching feetU

All day long that free flag tostU
Over the heads of the rebel hostU

Ever its torn folds rose and fellV
On the loyal winds that loved it wellV

And through the hill gaps sunset lightU
Shone over it with a warm good nightU
