BOWDOIN STREET BOSTONA
-
The end has come as come it mustB
To all things in these sweet June daysC
The teacher and the scholar trustB
Their parting feet to separate waysC
-
They part but in the years to beD
Shall pleasant memories cling to eachE
As shells bear inland from the seaD
The murmur of the rhythmic beachE
-
One knew the joy the sculptor knowsF
When plastic to his lightest touchG
His clay wrought model slowly growsF
To that fine grace desired so muchG
-
So daily grew before her eyesH
The living shapes whereon she wroughtI
Strong tender innocently wiseH
The child's heart with the woman's thoughtI
-
And one shall never quite forgetJ
The voice that called from dream and playK
The firm but kindly hand that setJ
Her feet in learning's pleasant wayK
-
The joy of Undine soul possessedL
The wakening sense the strange delightM
That swelled the fabled statue's breastL
And filled its clouded eyes with sightM
-
O Youth and Beauty loved of allN
Ye pass from girlhood's gate of dreamsO
In broader ways your footsteps fallN
Ye test the truth of all that seamsO
-
Her little realm the teacher leavesP
She breaks her wand of power apartQ
While for your love and trust she givesR
The warm thanks of a grateful heartQ
-
Hers is the sober summer noonS
Contrasted with your morn of springT
The waning with the waxing moonS
The folded with the outspread wingT
-
Across the distance of the yearsU
She sends her God speed back to youV
She has no thought of doubts or fearsU
Be but yourselves be pure be trueV
-
And prompt in duty heed the deepW
Low voice of conscience through the illX
And discord round about you keepW
Your faith in human nature stillX
-
Be gentle unto griefs and needsY
Be pitiful as woman shouldZ
And spite of all the lies of creedsY
Hold fast the truth that God is goodZ
-
Give and receive go forth and blessA2
The world that needs the hand and heartQ
Of Martha's helpful carefulnessA2
No less than Mary's better partQ
-
So shall the stream of time flow byB2
And leave each year a richer goodZ
And matron loveliness outvieC2
The nameless charm of maidenhoodZ
-
And when the world shall link your namesA2
With gracious lives and manners fineD2
The teacher shall assert her claimsA2
And proudly whisper 'These were mine '-
