Adjustment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBCDDDDEFFEDD GDDHIJJIKLLMDD

The tree of Faith its bare dry boughs must shedA
That nearer heaven the living ones may climbB
The false must fail though from our shores of timeB
The old lament be heard 'Great Pan is dead 'C
That wail is Error's from his high place hurledD
This sharp recoil is Evil undertrodD
Our time's unrest an angel sent of GodD
Troubling with life the waters of the worldD
Even as they list the winds of the Spirit blowE
To turn or break our century rusted vanesF
Sands shift and waste the rock alone remainsF
Where led of Heaven the strong tides come and goE
And storm clouds rent by thunderbolt and windD
Leave free of mist the permanent stars behindD
-
Therefore I trust although to outward senseG
Both true and false seem shaken I will holdD
With newer light my reverence for the oldD
And calmly wait the births of ProvidenceH
No gain is lost the clear eyed saints look downI
Untroubled on the wreck of schemes and creedsJ
Love yet remains its rosary of good deedsJ
Counting in task field and o'erpeopled townI
Truth has charmed life the Inward Word survivesK
And day by day its revelation bringsL
Faith hope and charity whatsoever thingsL
Which cannot be shaken stand Still holy livesM
Reveal the Christ of whom the letter toldD
And the new gospel verifies the oldD
