Take our hands James Russell LowellA
Our hearts are all thy ownB
To day we bid thee welcomeC
Not for ourselves aloneB
-
In the long years of thy absenceD
Some of us have grown oldE
And some have passed the portalsF
Of the Mystery untoldE
-
For the hands that cannot clasp theeG
For the voices that are dumbC
For each and all I bid theeG
A grateful welcome homeH
-
For Cedarcroft's sweet singerI
To the nine fold Muses dearJ
For the Seer the winding ConcordK
Paused by his door to hearL
-
For him our guide and NestorI
Who the march of song beganM
The white locks of his ninety yearsN
Bared to thy winds Cape AnnM
-
For him who to the musicO
Her pines and hemlocks playedP
Set the old and tender storyG
Of the lorn Acadian maidP
-
For him whose voice for freedomC
Swayed friend and foe at willQ
Hushed is the tongue of silverI
The golden lips are stillQ
-
For her whose life of dutyG
At scoff and menace smiledR
Brave as the wife of RolandS
Yet gentle as a ChildR
-
And for him the three hilled cityG
Shall hold in memory longT
Those name is the hint and tokenU
Of the pleasant Fields of SongT
-
For the old friends unforgottenU
For the young thou hast not knownU
I speak their heart warm greetingV
Come back and take thy ownU
-
From England's royal farewellsW
And honors fitly paidP
Come back dear Russell LowellA
To Elmwood's waiting shadeP
-
Come home with all the garlandsW
That crown of right thy headX
I speak for comrades livingV
I speak for comrades deadX
