The name the Gallic exile boreA
St Malo from thy ancient martB
Became upon our Western shoreA
Greenleaf for FeuillevertB
-
A name to hear in soft accordB
Of leaves by light winds overrunC
Or read upon the greening swardB
Of May in shade and sunC
-
The name my infant ear first heardB
Breathed softly with a mother's kissD
His mother's own no tenderer wordB
My father spake than thisD
-
No child have I to bear it onE
Be thou its keeper let it takeF
From gifts well used and duty doneC
New beauty for thy sakeF
-
The fair ideals that outranG
My halting footsteps seek and findB
The flawless symmetry of manG
The poise of heart and mindB
-
Stand firmly where I felt the swayH
Of every wing that fancy flewI
See clearly where I groped my wayH
Nor real from seeming knewI
-
And wisely choose and bravely holdB
Thy faith unswerved by cross or crownJ
Like the stout Huguenot of oldB
Whose name to thee comes downJ
-
As Marot's songs made glad the heartB
Of that lone exile haply mineK
May in life's heavy hours impartB
Some strength and hope to thineK
-
Yet when did Age transfer to YouthL
The hard gained lessons of its dayH
Each lip must learn the taste of truthL
Each foot must feel its wayH
-
We cannot hold the hands of choiceM
That touch or shun life's fateful keysN
The whisper of the inward voiceM
Is more than homiliesN
-
Dear boy for whom the flowers are bornO
Stars shine and happy song birds singP
What can my evening give to mornO
My winter to thy springP
-
A life not void of pure intentB
With small desert of praise or blameQ
The love I felt the good I meantB
I leave thee with my nameQ
