Oh thicker deeper darker growingA
The solemn vista to the tombB
Must know henceforth another shadowC
And give another cypress roomB
-
In love surpassing that of brothersD
We walked O friend from childhood's dayE
And looking back o'er fifty summersD
Our footprints track a common wayE
-
One in our faith and one our longingA
To make the world within our reachF
Somewhat the better for our livingA
And gladder for our human speechF
-
Thou heard'st with me the far off voicesG
The old beguiling song of fameH
But life to thee was warm and presentI
And love was better than a nameH
-
To homely joys and loves and friendshipsJ
Thy genial nature fondly clungK
And so the shadow on the dialL
Ran back and left thee always youngK
-
And who could blame the generous weaknessM
Which only to thyself unjustN
So overprized the worth of othersD
And dwarfed thy own with self distrustN
-
All hearts grew warmer in the presenceO
Of one who seeking not his ownP
Gave freely for the love of givingA
Nor reaped for self the harvest sownP
-
Thy greeting smile was pledge and preludeQ
Of generous deeds and kindly wordsR
In thy large heart were fair guest chambersD
Open to sunrise and the birdsR
-
The task was thine to mould and fashionS
Life's plastic newness into graceT
To make the boyish heart heroicU
And light with thought the maiden's faceT
-
O'er all the land in town and prairieV
With bended heads of mourning standW
The living forms that owe their beautyV
And fitness to thy shaping handW
-
Thy call has come in ripened manhoodX
The noonday calm of heart and mindY
While I who dreamed of thy remainingA
To mourn me linger still behindY
-
Live on to own with self upbraidingA
A debt of love still due from meV
The vain remembrance of occasionsZ
Forever lost of serving theeV
-
It was not mine among thy kindredA2
To join the silent funeral prayersB2
But all that long sad day of summerC2
My tears of mourning dropped with theirsB2
-
All day the sea waves sobbed with sorrowC
The birds forgot their merry trillsB2
All day I heard the pines lamentingA
With thine upon thy homestead hillsB2
-
Green be those hillside pines foreverC2
And green the meadowy lowlands beV
And green the old memorial beechesB2
Name carven in the woods of LeeV
-
Still let them greet thy life companionsB2
Who thither turn their pilgrim feetD2
In every mossy line recallingA
A tender memory sadly sweetD2
-
O friend if thought and sense avail notE2
To know thee henceforth as thou artF2
That all is well with thee foreverC2
I trust the instincts of my heartF2
-
Thine be the quiet habitationsB2
Thine the green pastures blossom sownP
And smiles of saintly recognitionS
As sweet and tender as thy ownP
-
Thou com'st not from the hush and shadowC
To meet us but to thee we comeG2
With thee we never can be strangersB2
And where thou art must still be homeH2
