A Day Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE GHHG IJJI KIIK

Talk not of sad November when a dayA
Of warm glad sunshine fills the sky of noonB
And a wind borrowed from some morn of JuneB
Stirs the brown grasses and the leafless sprayA
-
On the unfrosted pool the pillared pinesC
Lay their long shafts of shadow the small rillD
Singing a pleasant song of summer stillD
A line of silver down the hill slope shinesC
-
Hushed the bird voices and the hum of beesE
In the thin grass the crickets pipe no moreF
But still the squirrel hoards his winter storeF
And drops his nut shells from the shag bark treesE
-
Softly the dark green hemlocks whisper highG
Above the spires of yellowing larches showH
Where the woodpecker and home loving crowH
And jay and nut hatch winter s threat defyG
-
O gracious beauty ever new and oldI
O sights and sounds of nature doubly dearJ
When the low sunshine warns the closing yearJ
Of snow blown fields and waves of Arctic coldI
-
Close to my heart I fold each lovely thingK
The sweet day yields and not disconsolateI
With the calm patience of the woods I waitI
For leaf and blossom when God gives us SpringK
