To Dean SwiftA
-
-
Though courts the practice disallowB
I ne'er a friend will disavowB
It may be very wrong to know himC
And very prudent to forego himC
'Tis said that prudence changes friendsD
Oft as it suits one's private endsD
Ah Dean and you have many foesE
Behind before beneath your noseE
And fellows very high in stationF
Of high and low denominationF
Who dread you with a deadly spiteG
For what you speak and what you writeG
Where between satire and your witH
They feel themselves most sorely bitH
Ah can a dunce in church or stateI
So overflow with froth and hateI
And can a scribbling crew so spurtJ
On Pope and Swift who stand unhurtJ
-
Ah can it be a mighty raceK
For giants may hold power and placeK
Can scandals raise and libels penL
To prove that they are worthy menL
They suffered from your pen 'tis trueM
Therefore you have from them your dueM
You have no friends be it understoodN
Except myself and wise and goodN
To lay the matter on the tableO
And give it point I'll tell a fableO
-
A bee who greedy was of gainP
But wanted parts him to maintainP
Seeing small rogues by great ones thriveQ
Corruption sowed throughout the hiveQ
And as he rose in power and placeK
Importance settled on his faceK
All conscience found with him discreditR
But impudence the loudest meritR
Wealth claimed distinction and found graceK
But poverty was ever baseK
Right law and industry gave wayS
Where'er his selfish rule had swayS
And so corruption seized the swarmT
Who plundered underneath his armU
Thus he harangued Whilst vulgar soulsV
Waste life in low mechanic holesV
Let us scorn drudgery the droneW
And wasp whose elegance we ownW
Like gentlemen sport in the raysX
Of sunbeams on all summer daysX
It were not fitting they should moilO
They live upon their neighbour's toilO
-
A bee with indignation warmT
Stepped forth from the applauding swarmT
-
The laws our native hives protectY
And for the laws bees hold respectY
I do not mind your frown I cryZ
Bees live by honest industryA2
'Twas toil and honest gain to thriveQ
Which gave us an ancestral hiveQ
Which gave us our time honoured domeB2
Bequeathed with store of honeycombB2
Pursue the self same road to fameC2
By which your fathers won their nameC2
But know the road you are pursuingD2
Will lead you to the brink of ruinF
-
He spoke but he was only hissedE2
And from his cell forthwith dismissedE2
With him two other friends resignedF2
Indignant at the Apian mindF2
These drones who now oppress the StateI
Proclaim our virtue by their hateI
The exile said our honest zealO
Will serve again the common wealO
And we be sure shall be replacedG2
When they shall from this hive be chasedG2
