For the last timeA
The last last timeA
The lastB
All those last times have I lived through againC
And every last renews itself in painD
Yes each returns and each returns in vainD
You return not the last remains the lastB
And I remain to castB
Weak anchors of my love in shifting sandsE
Of faithF
The anchors drag nothing I see save deathG
-
Together weH
Talked and were glad I could not seeH
That one black gesture menaced you and meH
We kissed and partedI
I left you and was even merry heartedI
And now my love is thwartedI
That reaches back to you and searches roundJ
And dares not look on that harsh turfless moundJ
-
And that last timeA
We walked together and the air acoldJ
Hummed shrill around the time that youK
Walked heavilyH
And I dared not to seeH
Nor dared you then to speak of what must beH
We knew not what the shut days would unfoldJ
Nay could not know till all the days were toldJ
But that last time we walked together andJ
And walk no more together nor clasp handJ
In hand just stiffly as we used to doK
-
Never in dreamsL
O happy never in stealing dreamsL
We meet never againC
I live by night the day's slow dying painD
The last last timeA
The lastJ
That time is past yet in too golden dayJ
My heart goes from me whisperingM
Where are you you you youK
And comes back easeless to an easeless breastJ
But at night I restJ
Dreamless as derelict ships ride out to seaH
Empty and no bird even on the snapp'd mastJ
Pauses into oblivion her shadow's castJ
Into the empty night goes lonely sheH
And into sleep go oh more lonely IN
