The Kestrel Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCABCDADEFGHFIHEJAK BLMNNOO

In a great western wind we climbed the hillA
And saw the clouds run up ride high and sinkB
And there were shadows running at our feetC
Till it seemed the very earth could not be stillA
Nor could our hearts be still nor could we thinkB
Our hearts could ever be still our thought less fleetC
Than the dizzy clouds less than the flying windD
Eastward the valley and the dark steep hillA
And other hills and valleys lost behindD
In mist and light The hedges were not yet bareE
Though the wind picked at them as he went byF
The woods were fire a fire that dense or clearG
Burned steady but could not burn up the shadowsH
Rooted where the trees' roots entangled lieF
In darkness or a flame burned solitaryI
In the middle of the highest of brown meadowsH
Burned solitary and unconsuming whereE
A red tree stooped to its black shadow andJ
The kestrel's shadow hunted the kestrel up the hillA
We climbed and as we stood where yet we standK
And of the visioned sun and shadow still drinkB
Happiness like a shadow chased our thoughtL
That tossed on free wings up and down the worldM
Till by that wild swift darting shadow caughtN
Our free spirits their free pinions furledN
Then as the kestrel began once more the heavens to climbO
A new winged spirit rose clear above the hills of timeO
