Eve goes slowlyB
Dancing lightlyB
Clad with shadow up the hillsC
Birds their singingD
Cease at last and silenceE
Falling like fine rain the valley fillsC
-
Not a bat's cryA
Stirs the stillnessF
Perfect as broad water sleepingD
Not a moth's wingsG
Flit in the gathering darknessF
Not a mouselike moonray ev'n comes creepingD
-
Then a light shinesH
From the casementI
Wreathed with jasmine boughs and starsJ
Palely goldenK
As the late eve's primroseL
Glimmers through green leafy prison barsJ

Only joy nowM
Come in silenceE
Come before your look's forgotI
Come and hearkenM
While the lonely shadowI
Broadens on the hill and then is notI
-
Now the hour isN
Here the place isN
Here am I who saw thee hereO
Evening darkensN
All is still and marvellousN
Now the sharp stars in the deep sky peerP
-
Come and fill meB
As the wind fillsN
Leafy wide boughs of a treeB
Come and windlikeD
Cleanse my slumbrous branchesN
Come and moonlike bathe the leaves of meB

Eve has gone andI
Night followsN
Every bush is now a ghostI
Every tree loomsN
Lofty large and sombreB
All day's simple friendliness is lostI
-
See the poplarsN
Black in blacknessN
In all their leaves there is no sighA
'Neath that darklingD
Cedar who dare wanderB
Now or under the vast oak would lieA
-
Till that tinglingD
Silence brokenM
Every clod renews its breathQ
Birds leaves grassesN
Heave as one then sleep onM
Full of sweeter sleep and unlike deathQ

-
-
Only joy nowM
Come like musicD
Falling clear from strings of lightI
Come like shadowI
Drinking up late sunraysN
Come like moonrays sweeping the round nightI
-
See how night isN
Opening flowerlikeD
Open so thy bosom to meB
See how earth fallsN
Easeful into silenceN
Let my moth wing'd thought so fall on theeB
-
While the lamp's beamR
Primrose goldenM
Now is like a shifting spearB
Borne in battleS
Seen awhile then hiddenM
Bold then beaten now long lost and hereB
