Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIJ KLML NOPO NCGC AQIR

Because the earth is vast and darkA
And wet and coldB
Because man's heart wants warmth and lightC
Lest it grow oldB
-
Therefore the house was built wall roofD
And brick and beamE
By a lost hand following the lostF
Delight of a dreamE
-
And room and stair show how that handG
Groped in eager doubtH
With needless weight of teasing timberI
Matching his thoughtJ
-
Such fond superfluousness of strengthK
In wall and woodL
As his half wise half fearful eyeM
Deemed only goodL
-
His brain he built into the houseN
Laboured his bonesO
He burnt his heart into the brickP
And red hearth stonesO
-
It is his blood that makes the houseN
Still warm safe brightC
Honest as aim and eye and handG
As clean as lightC
-
Because the earth is vast and darkA
The house was builtQ
Now with another heart and fireI
To be fulfilledR
