The Sea Voyage is a late Jacobean comedy written by John Fletcher and Philip Massinger. The play is notable for its imitation of Shakespeare's The Tempest. The play begins with a storm, and features a desert island and castaways at a banquet, just as in The Tempest. In addition to Shakespeare's play, the collaborators consulted recent accounts of actual explorations, including those of William Strachey and John Nicoll. Along with Fletcher's The Island Princess, The Sea Voyage has attracted the attention of some late twentieth century critics and scholars as part of the literature of colonialism and anti-colonialism.

John Fletcher (1579-1625) was a Jacobean playwright. Following William Shakespeare as house playwright for the King's Men, he was among the most prolific and influential dramatists of his day; both during his lifetime and in the early Restoration, his fame rivaled Shakespeare's. Though his reputation has been eclipsed since, Fletcher remains an important transitional figure between the Elizabethan popular tradition and the popular drama of the Restoration. His works include: The Humourous Lieutenant, The Faithful Shepherdess (1608), Wit Without Money (1614) and Rule a Wife and Have a Wife (1624).

John Fletcher Books, John Fletcher poetry book The Mad Lover Authors: John Fletcher

The Mad Lover is a Jacobean stage play, a tragicomedy by John Fletcher. As its title indicates, deals with a case of "melancholia" or depression due to an unsatisfactory romantic attachment. In this respect, it relates to a number of other dramas of its historical era that include the same or similar subject matter, including Fletcher's The Noble Gentleman, The Nice Valour, and John Ford's The Lover's Melancholy. The Mad Lover has been noted for its use of music as a treatment for mental illness; the play has been called "the most extensive example within a single play of the use of musical sound and imagery in the depiction and cure of madness." The characters in the play stage a masque in their attempt to treat the mad general, Memnon; drawing on the myth of Orpheus, it is a Masque of Beasts and Trees, with an ape, dog, lion, and dancing trees - all former men and foolish lovers.

The Loyal Subject is a Jacobean era stage play, a tragicomedy by John Fletcher that was originally published in the first Beaumont and Fletcher folio of 1647. Scholars have devoted significant attention to the question of Fletcher's sources for his play. Fletcher modeled his play on an earlier work by Thomas Heywood titled The Royal King and the Loyal Subject, first published in 1637 but written two or three decades earlier. He also used a play by Lope de Vega called El gran duque de Moscovia, written c. 1613. An extensive study of the relationship between the plays of Fletcher and Lope de Vega and their background in Russian history has been published by Ervin Brody.

Bliss Carman and Richard Hovey Poem
In A Copy Of Browning
by Bliss Carman and Richard Hovey

Browning, old fellow,
Your leaves grow yellow,
Beginning to mellow
As seasons pass.
Your cover is wrinkled,
And stained and sprinkled,
And warped and crinkled
From sleep on the grass.
