To My Honor'd Friend, Dr. Charleton (excerpt) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAAAAABBCCDDEEEEAAFF EEGAHIJKAALL

The longest tyranny that ever sway'dA
Was that wherein our ancestors betray'dA
Their free born reason to the StagiriteA
And made his torch their universal lightA
So truth while only one supplied the stateA
Grew scarce and dear and yet sophisticateA
Until 't was bought like emp'ric wares or charmsB
Hard words seal'd up with Aristotle's armsB
Columbus was the first that shook his throneC
And found a temp'rate in a torrid zoneC
The fev'rish air fann'd by a cooling breezeD
The fruitful vales set round with shady treesD
And guiltless men who danc'd away their timeE
Fresh as their groves and happy as their climeE
Had we still paid that homage to a nameE
Which only God and Nature justly claimE
The western seas had been our utmost boundA
Where poets still might dream the sun was drown'dA
And all the stars that shine in southern skiesF
Had been admir'd by none but savage eyesF
-
Among th' asserters of free reason's claimE
Th' English are not the least in worth or fameE
The world to Bacon does not only oweG
Its present knowledge but its future tooA
Gilbert shall live till loadstones cease to drawH
Or British fleets the boundless ocean aweI
And noble Boyle not less in nature seenJ
Than his great brother read in states and menK
The circling streams once thought but pools of bloodA
Whether life's fuel or the body's foodA
From dark oblivion Harvey's name shall saveL
While Ent keeps all the honour that he gaveL
