Prologue To Tyrannic Love Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEEFFGHIIJJK KLLMM

Self love which never rightly understoodA
Makes poets still conclude their plays are goodA
And malice in all critics reigns so highB
That for small errors they whole plays decryB
So that to see this fondness and that spiteC
You'd think that none but madmen judge or writeC
Therefore our poet as he thinks not fitD
To impose upon you what he writes for witD
So hopes that leaving you your censures freeE
You equal judges of the whole will beE
They judge but half who only faults will seeE
Poets like lovers should be bold and dareF
They spoil their business with an over careF
And he who servilely creeps after senseG
Is safe but ne'er will reach an excellenceH
Hence 'tis our poet in his conjuringI
Allow'd his fancy the full scope and swingI
But when a tyrant for his theme he hadJ
He loosed the reins and bid his muse run madJ
And though he stumbles in a full careerK
Yet rashness is a better fault than fearK
He saw his way but in so swift a paceL
To choose the ground might be to lose the raceL
They then who of each trip the advantage takeM
Find but those faults which they want wit to makeM
