Prologue To "oedipus." Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDEFFGGHIJKLLBB MMNNOOPPQQRSSSTT

When Athens all the Grecian state did guideA
And Greece gave laws to all the world besideA
Then Sophocles with Socrates did sitB
Supreme in wisdom one and one in witB
And wit from wisdom differ'd not in thoseC
But as 'twas sung in verse or said in proseC
Then Oedipus on crowded theatresD
Drew all admiring eyes and listening earsE
The pleased spectator shouted every lineF
The noblest manliest and the best designF
And every critic of each learned ageG
By this just model has reform'd the stageG
Now should it fail as Heaven avert our fearH
Damn it in silence lest the world should hearI
For were it known this poem did not pleaseJ
You might set up for perfect savagesK
Your neighbours would not look on you as menL
But think the nation all turn'd Picts againL
Faith as you manage matters 'tis not fitB
You should suspect yourselves of too much witB
Drive not the jest too far but spare this pieceM
And for this once be not more wise than GreeceM
See twice do not pellmell to damning fallN
Like true born Britons who ne'er think at allN
Pray be advised and though at Mons you wonO
On pointed cannon do not always runO
With some respect to ancient wit proceedP
You take the four first councils for your creedP
But when you lay tradition wholly byQ
And on the private spirit alone relyQ
You turn fanatics in your poetryR
If notwithstanding all that we can sayS
You needs will have your penn'orths of the playS
And come resolved to damn because you payS
Record it in memorial of the factT
The first play buried since the woollen actT
