Prologue To Caesar Borgia Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDEFFGHIIJJJKKLLM MNNOOJJPPQQRRSTUVVTT WW

The unhappy man who once has trailed a penA
Lives not to please himself but other menA
Is always drudging wastes his life and bloodB
Yet only eats and drinks what you think goodC
What praise soe'er the poetry deserveD
Yet every fool can bid the poet starveE
That fumbling lecher to revenge is bentF
Because he thinks himself or whore is meantF
Name but a cuckold all the city swarmsG
From Leadenhall to Ludgate is in armsH
Were there no fear of Antichrist or FranceI
In the best time poor poets live by chanceI
Either you come not here or as you graceJ
Some old acquaintance drop into the placeJ
Careless and qualmish with a yawning faceJ
You sleep o'er wit and by my troth you mayK
Most of your talents lie another wayK
You love to hear of some prodigious taleL
The bell that tolled alone or Irish whaleL
News is your food and you enough provideM
Both for yourselves and all the world besideM
One theatre there is of vast resortN
Which whilome of Requests was called the CourtN
But now the great exchange of news 'tis hightO
And full of hum and buzz from noon till nightO
Up stairs and down you run as for a raceJ
And each man wears three nations in his faceJ
So big you look though claret you retrenchP
That armed with bottled ale you huff the FrenchP
But all your entertainment still is fedQ
By villains in our own dull island bredQ
Would you return to us we dare engageR
To show you better rogues upon the stageR
You know no poison but plain ratsbane hereS
Death's more refined and better bred elsewhereT
They have a civil way in ItalyU
By smelling a perfume to make you dieV
A trick would make you lay your snuff box byV
Murder's a trade so known and practised thereT
That 'tis infallible as is the chairT
But mark their feasts you shall behold such pranksW
The Pope says grace but 'tis the devil gives thanksW
