Epilogue To "the Man Of Mode; Or, Sir Fopling Flutter;" By Sir George Etherege, 1676 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEFGGHHIIJJKK LLGGMMNNOPMMMM

Most modern wits such monstrous fools have shownA
They seem not of Heaven's making but their ownA
Those nauseous harlequins in farce may passB
But there goes more to a substantial assB
Something of man must be exposed to viewC
That gallants they may more resemble youC
Sir Fopling is a fool so nicely writD
The ladies would mistake him for a witD
And when he sings talks loud and cocks would cryE
I vow methinks he's pretty companyF
So brisk so gay so travell'd so refinedG
As he took pains to graff upon his kindG
True fops help nature's work and go to schoolH
To file and finish God Almighty's foolH
Yet none Sir Fopling him or him can callI
He's knight o' the shire and represents ye allI
From each he meets he culls whate'er he canJ
Legion's his name a people in a manJ
His bulky folly gathers as it goesK
And rolling o'er you like a snow ball growsK
His various modes from various fathers followL
One taught the toss and one the new French wallowL
His sword knot this his cravat that design'dG
And this the yard long snake he twirls behindG
From one the sacred periwig he gain'dM
Which wind ne'er blew nor touch of hat profanedM
Another's diving bow he did adoreN
Which with a shog casts all the hair beforeN
Till he with full decorum brings it backO
And rises with a water spaniel shakeP
As for his songs the ladies' dear delightM
These sure he took from most of you who writeM
Yet every man is safe from what he fear'dM
For no one fool is hunted from the herdM
