'O which is the last rose 'A
A blossom of no nameB
At midnight the snow cameB
At daybreak a vast roseC
In darkness unfurl'dD
O'er petall'd the worldD
-
Its odourless pallorE
Blossom'd forlornF
Till radiant valourE
Establish'd the mornF
Till the nightG
Was undoneH
In her fightG
With the sunH
-
The brave orb in state roseC
And crimson he shone firstI
While from the high vineJ
Of heaven the dawn burstI
Staining the great roseC
From sky line to sky lineJ
-
The red rose of mornF
A white rose at noon turn'dK
But at sunset rebornF
All red again soon burn'dK
Then the pale rose of noondayK
Rebloom'd in the nightK
And spectrally whiteK
In the lightK
Of the moon layL
-
But the vast roseC
Was scentlessC
And this is the reasonH
When the blast roseC
RelentlessC
And brought in due seasonH
The snow rose the last roseC
Congeal'd in its breathM
Then came with it treasonH
The traitor was DeathM
-
In lee valleys crowdedK
The sheep and the birdsC
Were frozen and shroudedK
In flights and in herdsC
In highwaysC
And bywaysC
The young and the oldK
Were tortured and madden'dK
And kill'd by the coldK
But many were gladden'dK
By the beautiful last roseC
The blossom of no nameB
That came when the snow cameB
In darkness unfurl'dK
The wonderful vast roseC
That fill'd all the worldK
