A Cinque Port Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDD EFGFHH IJKJGG ALMLEE

Below the down the stranded townA
What may betide forlornly waitsB
With memories of smoky skiesC
When Gallic navies crossed the straitsB
When waves with fire and blood grew brightD
And cannon thundered through the nightD
-
With swinging stride the rhythmic tideE
Bore to the harbour barque and sloopF
Across the bar the ship of warG
In castled stern and lanterned poopF
Came up with conquests on her leeH
The stately mistress of the seaH
-
Where argosies have wooed the breezeI
The simple sheep are feeding nowJ
And near and far across the barK
The ploughman whistles at the ploughJ
Where once the long waves washed the shoreG
Larks from their lowly lodgings soarG
-
Below the down the stranded townA
Hears far away the rollers beatL
About the wall the seabirds callM
The salt wind murmurs through the streetL
Forlorn the sea's forsaken brideE
Awaits the end that shall betideE
