Upon The Lark And The Fowler Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIAA JKLLMNLL O GGPPQQRSTT

Thou simple bird what makes thou here to playA
Look there's the fowler pr'ythee come awayA
Do'st not behold the net Look there 'tis spreadB
Venture a little further thou art deadB
Is there not room enough in all the fieldC
For thee to play in but thou needs must yieldC
To the deceitful glitt'ring of a glassD
Plac'd betwixt nets to bring thy death to passD
Bird if thou art so much for dazzling lightE
Look there's the sun above thee dart uprightE
Thy nature is to soar up to the skyF
Why wilt thou come down to the nets and dieF
Take no heed to the fowler's tempting callG
This whistle he enchanteth birds withalG
Or if thou see'st a live bird in his netH
Believe she's there 'cause hence she cannot getH
Look how he tempteth thee with is decoyI
That he may rob thee of thy life thy joyI
Come pr'ythee bird I pr'ythee come awayA
Why should this net thee take when 'scape thou mayA
Hadst thou not wings or were thy feathers pull'dJ
Or wast thou blind or fast asleep wer't lull'dK
The case would somewhat alter but for theeL
Thy eyes are ope and thou hast wings to fleeL
Remember that thy song is in thy riseM
Not in thy fall earth's not thy paradiseN
Keep up aloft then let thy circuits beL
Above where birds from fowler's nets are freeL

ComparisonO
-
This fowler is an emblem of the devilG
His nets and whistle figures of all evilG
His glass an emblem is of sinful pleasureP
And his decoy of who counts sin a treasureP
This simple lark's a shadow of a saintQ
Under allurings ready now to faintQ
This admonisher a true teacher isR
Whose works to show the soul the snare and blissS
And how it may this fowler's net escapeT
And not commit upon itself this rapeT
