As 'tis appointed men should dieA
So judgment is the nextB
That meets them most assuredlyC
For so saith holy textB
-
Wherefore of judgment I shall nowD
Inform you what I mayE
That you may see what 'tis and howD
'Twill be with men that dayE
-
This world it hath a time to standF
Which time when ended thenG
Will issue judgment out of handF
Upon all sorts of menG
-
The Judge we find in God's recordH
The Son of man for heC
By God's appointment is made LordH
And Judge of all that beC
-
Wherefore this Son of man shall comeI
At last to count with allJ
And unto them shall give just doomK
Whether they stand or fallJ
-
Behold ye now the majestyC
And state that shall attendL
This Lord this Judge and Justice highA
When he doth now descendL
-
He comes with head as white as snowM
With eyes like flames of fireN
In justice clad from top to toeM
Most glorious in attireN
-
His face is filled with gravityC
His tongue is like a swordH
His presence awes both stout and highA
The world shakes at his wordO
-
He comes in flaming fire andP
With angels clear and brightQ
Each with a trumpet in his handF
Clothed in shining whiteQ
-
The trump of God sounds in the airR
The dead do hear his voiceS
The living too run here and thereR
Who made not him their choiceS
-
Thus to his place he doth repairR
Appointed for his throneT
Where he will sit to judge and whereR
He'll count with every oneU
-
Angels attending on his handF
By thousands on a rowM
Yea thousand thousands by him standF
And at his beck do goM
-
Thus being set the books do opeV
In which all crimes are writW
All virtues too of faith and hopeV
Of love and every whitW
-
Of all that man hath done or saidX
Or did intend to doY
Whether they sinn'd or were afraidZ
Evil to come intoY
-
Before this bar each sinner nowD
In person must appearA2
Under his judgment there to bowD
With trembling and with fearA2
-
Within whose breast a witness thenG
Will certainly ariseB2
That to each charge will say AmenG
While they seek and deviseB2
-
To shun the sentence which the LordH
Against them then will readX
Out of the books of God's recordH
With majesty and dreadX
-
But every heart shall opened beC
Before this judge most highA
Yea every thought to judgment heC
Will bring assuredlyC
-
And every word and action tooY
He there will manifestC2
Yea all that ever thou didst doY
Or keep within thy breastC2
-
Shall then be seen and laid beforeD2
The world that then will standF
To see thy judge open ev'ry soreD2
And all thy evils scann'dF
-
Weighing each sin and wickednessE2
With so much equityC
Proportioning of thy distressF2
And woful miseryC
-
With so much justice doing rightQ
That thou thyself shalt sayE
My sins have brought me to this plightQ
I threw myself awayE
-
Into that gulph my sins have broughtG2
Me justly to possessF2
For which I blame not Christ I wroughtG2
It out by wickednessE2
-
But O how willingly would theseH2
That thus in judgment beC
If that they might have help or easeH2
Unto the mountains fleeC
-
They would rejoice if that they mightQ
But underneath them creepV
To hide them from revenging rightQ
For fear of which they weepV
-
But all in vain the mountains thenG
Will all be fled and goneI2
No shelter will be found for menG
That now are left aloneT
-
For succour they did not regardJ2
When Christ by grace did callJ
To them therefore they are not heardO
No mountains on them fallJ
-
Before this Judge no one shall shroudK2
Himself under pretenceH2
Of knowledge which hath made him proudK2
Nor seeming penitenceH2
-
No high profession here can standF
Unless sincerityC
Hath been therewith commixed andP
Brought forth simplicityC
-
No mask nor vizor here can hideL2
The heart that rotten isH2
All cloaks now must be laid asideL2
No sinner must have blissH2
-
Though most approve of thee and countM2
Thee upright in thy heartN2
Yea though preferred and made surmountM2
Most men to act thy partN2
-
In treading where the godly trodO2
As to an outward showM
Yet this hold still the grace of GodO2
Takes hold on but a fewY
-
So as to make them truly suchP2
As then shall stand beforeD2
This Judge with gladness this is muchP2
Yet true for evermoreD2
-
The tree of life this paradiseH2
Doth always beautifyA
'Cause of our health it is the riseH2
And perpetuityC
-
Here stands the golden throne of graceH2
From out of which do runU
Those crystal streams that make this placeH2
Far brighter than the sunU
-
Here stands mount Zion with her kingQ2
Jerusalem aboveR2
That holy and delightful thingQ2
So beautified with loveR2
-
That as a mother succours thoseH2
Which of her body beC
So she far more all such as closeH2
In with her Lord and sheC
-
Her grace her everlasting doorsH2
Will open wide untoY
Them all with welcome welcome poorS2
Rich bond free high and lowM
-
Unto the kingdom which our LordH
Appointed hath for allJ
That hath his name and word ador'dH
Because he did them callJ
-
Unto that work which also theyE
Sincerely did fulfilJ
Not shunning always to obeyE
His gracious holy willJ
-
Besides this much doth beautifyA
This goodly paradiseH2
That from all quarters constantlyJ
Whole thousands as the priceH2
-
Of precious blood do here arriveT2
As safe escaping allJ
Sin hell and satan did contriveT2
To bring them into thrallJ
-
Each telling his deliveranceH2
I' th' open face of heavenU
Still calling to remembranceH2
How fiercely they were drivenU
-
By deadly foe who did pursueY
As swift as eagles flyA
Which if thou have not down thou mustU2
With those that then shall dieA
The second death and be accurs'dA
Of God For certainlyJ
-
The truth of grace shall only hereV2
Without a blush be boldA
To stand whilst others quake and fearA2
And dare not once beholdA
-
That heart that here was right for GodA
Shall there be comfortedA
But those that evil ways have trodA
Shall then hang down the headA
-
As sore confounded with the guiltA
That now upon them liesH2
Because they did delight in filthW2
And beastly vanitiesH2
-
Or else because they did deceiveX2
With hypocriticalJ
Disguises their own souls and leaveX2
Or shun that best of allJ
-
Approved word of righteousnessH2
They were invited toA
Embrace therefore they no accessH2
Now to him have but woeM
-
For every one must now receiveX2
According to their waysH2
They that unto the Lord did cleaveX2
The everlasting joysH2
-
Those that did die in wickednessH2
To execution sentA
There still to grapple with distressH2
Which nothing can preventA
-
Of which two states I next shall writeA
Wherefore I pray give earV2
And to them bend with all our mightA
Your heart with filial fearA2
