Now if thou wouldst inherit righteousnessA
And so sanctification possessB
-
In body soul and spirit then thou mustC
To Jesus fly as one ungodly firstD
-
And so by him crave pardon for thy sinE
Which thou hast loved and hast lived inE
-
For this cannot at all forgiven beF
For any righteousness that is in theeF
-
Because the best thou hast is filthy ragsG
Profane presumptuous and most beastly bragsG
-
Of flesh and blood which always cross doth lieH
To God to grace and thy felicityF
-
Then righteousness imputed thou must haveI
Thee from that guilt and punishment to saveJ
-
Thou liest under as a sinful manK
Throughout polluted and that never canK
-
By any other means acquitted beF
Or ever have true holiness in theeF
-
The reason is because all graces areL
Only in Christ and be infused whereM
-
Or into those whom he doth justifyH
By what himself hath done that he therebyH
-
Might be the whole of all that happinessA
The sinner shall enjoy here and in blissN
-
Besides if holiness should first be foundO
In those whom God doth pardon then the groundO
-
Why we forgiven are would seem to beF
He first found holiness in thee and meF
-
But this the holy Scriptures will refuteP
And prove that righteousness he doth imputeP
-
Without respect to goodness first in manK
For to speak truth indeed no goodness canK
-
Be found in those that underneath the lawQ
Do stand for if God goodness in them sawQ
-
Why doth he once and twice say There is noneR
That righteous be no not so much as oneR
-
None understandeth none seek after GodS
His ways they have not known but have abodeT
-
In wickedness unprofitably theyU
Must needs appear to be then every wayU
-
Their throats an open sepulchre alsoV
Their mouths are full of filthy cursings tooW
-
And bitterness yea underneath their lipsX
The asp hath poison O how many slipsX
-
And falls in sin must such poor people haveI
Now here's the holiness that should them saveJ
-
Or as a preparation go beforeY
To move God to do for them less or moreY
-
No grace must on thee righteousness bestowV
Or else sin will for ever thee undoW
-
Sweet Paul this doctrine also doth expressB
Where he saith Some may have righteousnessA
-
Though works they have not and it thus may standZ
Grace by the promise gives what the commandZ
-
Requireth us to do and so are weF
Quitted from doing and by grace made freeF
